After School Program

In 2014, we launched our after school to assist students struggling academically and prepare those in need for state exams. We are positive that providing the kids with extra help after school will be the first step towards succeeding at this. How has this impacted the kids academically? Similarly to schools in the US, in Haiti, kids have to maintain a certain grade point average in order to be promoted to the next class level. Oftentimes, many kids have to repeat a grade level numerous times before passing it. This leads to discouragement  and in some instances, they eventually abandon their pursuit of education and drop out of school.  The system does not give failing students opportunities to seek help unless their parents are able to afford private tutors. Children learn at different paces and it is important to assist the ones that may need a boost before they get it. Our approach at YHS, is to provide these kids help after their regular school day. This will help them regain confidence and see improvement in their grades, which will in turn encourage them to stay in school. Our organization is currently sponsoring Institut Communautaire Lumière to implement this program. Funding this program for the 2014-2015 academic year cost only us $500 from January to June. The expense was well worth it, because the school saw almost 80% success rate from the state exam.  Help us continue to support our programs by donating today.  We’re on track for another successful year in the 2015-2016 academic year.

Christmas Bonus To Teachers

In 2014 and 2015, we distributed our Christmas kindness bonus to underpaid teachers at Institut Communautaire Lumière in Petion-Ville, Haiti.  This gesture shows them that their hard work and dedication to their students have not gone unnoticed.  We plan to continue to show them this from this year onward with donations from our supporters.

Annual Toy Drive

Because of the generosity of our donors, we were able to do a YHS Toy Giveaway in 2015.  We were happy to put a smile on the students’ faces with a small gift for the holidays.

YHS Poetry Contest

We’ve launched a poetry contest for professional and aspiring poets.  We did this to encourage writers to continue to pursue their passion and to also give them a platform to showcase their work.  Click here to read the contest rules and enter.   Our contest runs all year long, and we announce the winners every quarter.  If this project is successful, a live show will be held and entrants will be invited to participate.
